Josol-cs31-problems and exercises no.1

Problem no.1

An exploded view of a modern personal computer and peripherals:

1.      Scanner
2.      CPU (Microprocessor)
3.      Primary storage (RAM)
4.      Expansion cards (graphics cards, etc.)
5.      Power supply
6.      Optical disc drive
7.      Secondary storage (Hard disk)
8.      Motherboard
9.      Speakers
10.    Monitor
11.    System software
12.    Application software
13.    Keyboard
14.    Mouse
15.    External hard disk
16.    Printer

Scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image.

CPU (Microprocessor)  is the hardware within a computer that carries out the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetical, logical, and input/output operations of the system.

Primary storage (RAM) is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. It is a core function and fundamental component of computers.

Expansion cards  is a printed circuit board that can be inserted into anelectrical connector, or expansion slot on a computer motherboard, backplane or riser card to add functionality to a computer system via the expansion bus.

Power supply converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer.

Optical disc drive is a flat, usually circular disc which encodes binary data (bits) in the form of pits(binary value of 0 or off, due to lack of reflection when read) and lands (binary value of 1 or on, due to a reflection when read) on a special material on one of its flat surfaces.

Secondary storage (Hard disk) is used to store a large amount of data at lesser cost per byte than primary memory.

Motherboard  is the main printed circuit board (PCB) found in computers and other expandable systems. It holds many of the crucial electronic components of the system, such as the central processing unit (CPU) and memory, and provides connectors for other peripherals. Unlike a backplane, a motherboard contains significant sub-systems such as the processor.

Speakers  is an electroacoustic transducer that produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input.

Monitor is an electronic visual display for computers. The monitor comprises the display device, circuitry and an enclosure.

System software  is computer software designed to operate and control the computer hardware and to provide a platform for running application software.

Application software is all the computer software that causes a computer to perform useful tasks (compare with Computer viruses) beyond the running of the computer itself. A specific instance of such software is called a software application, application or app.

Keyboard   is a typewriter-style device, which uses an arrangement of buttons or keys, to act as mechanical levers or electronic switches. Following the decline of punch cards and paper tape, interaction via teleprinter-style keyboards became the main input device for computers.

Mouse is a pointing device that functions by detecting two-dimensional motion relative to its supporting surface. Physically, a mouse consists of an object held under one of the user's hands, with one or more buttons.

External hard disk  is typically connected via USB. Plug and play drive functionality offers system compatibility, and features large storage options and portable design.

Printer  is a peripheral which produces a representation of an electronic document on physical media such as paper or transparency film. Many printers are local peripherals connected directly to a nearby personal computer.

 2. For Groceries transaction, Data is the display of numerical information such as the number of items and the prices of goods in the supermarket. It is the basis or a record of the following items that being sold. It is also called as the process of the supermarket staff that being used for organizing the way they approach their customers.

The process starts from the customer together with the items he/she chooses going to the cashier for the payment by first getting the card number of the customer. This card will be used to earn points from the item he/she buys and it is optional. After this the item will be recognize to find out its price then the cashier will enter the price and the number of items. If the process will be monitored, the total will automatically appear and payment will follow including the change if needed.

Case Study 1

An Organization Chart of New Century's Office Staff

Identify at least three business processes that New Century performs and explain who is responsible for the specific tasks.

*Fred Brown is in control with payroll, tax reporting, and profit distribution processes.

*Susan Gifford is responsible in keeping and doing the patient records in the clinic.

*The insurance reporting & accounting are in charge to Tom Capaletti.

*Lisa Sung is responsible in appointment processing.

*In making orders and organizing office and clinic supplies, Carla Herrera is the one facilitating it.

Explain how New Century might use a transaction processing system, a business support system, and a user productivity system. For each type of system, provide a specific example, and explain how the system would benefit the clinic.

-New Century Health Clinic might use a transaction processing system for appointment processing that ensures the integrity, availability, and security of data and it also ensures fast response time and high transaction throughout.  It includes functions to access data, to perform intercomputer communications, and to design and manage the user interface.

-New Century might also consider using a business support system for its patient records that will provide information support for users having to deal with patients. It is used to support billing & charging.

-New Century Health Clinjc might use the user productivity system because it needs a database management system that will help user access patient records faster. An information system that provides employees at all organizational levels with a wide array of tools that can improve quality and job performance. An example of a user productivity system is an e-mail system.

During the systems development process, should New Century consider any of the following: B2B, vertical and horizontal system packages, or the Internet? Explain your answers.
New Century might consider B2B for its claims and payment transactions with insurance companies. B2B is also used in the context of communication and collaboration. Many businesses are now using social media to connect with their consumers (B2C); however, they are now using similar tools within the business so employees can connect with one another. When communication is taking place amongst employees, this can be referred to as "B2B" communication.
